Lost: LockDown (Review)

This week’s episode started at the exact point where last week’s left off. Henry Gale (that guy that’s a prisoner. You know him right? He was the bad guy in Saw?) had just finished telling Jack and Locke that if he was and other, that he would have sent Ana, Sayid, and Charlie into a trap.

This week started with Jack and Locke freaking out on Henry. For once, they were actually justified. Henry got all defensive, “Don’t worry guys, I was just making a stupid joke!” Yeah, that’s an excellent joke! Let’s tell my guards/potential murderers that I might have killed their friends!

Anyways, Locke gets upset (a little too upset) and literally throws Henry into the locked cellar. Jack heads off to interrogate the rest of the camp, and we get our first Flashback of the episode.

It looks like Locke is getting ready to propose to Helen. Really, she is the one good thing in his tragedy-of-a-life. Right from this moment, I knew that this is what this episode would be about. The writers just can’t give Locke a break. Locke had to lose Helen. Helen’s reading the obituaries, because they’re the “happiest part of the paper”. Clearly, she’s never read the Oshawa This Week editorials, because they’re always a good laugh. That’s when we find out that Locke’s father is dead. Good time to end the flashback.

This is when we get our first and only clip of Ana, Sayid, and Charlie looking for the balloon. They find it allright, and also see the grave of Henry’s wife. Seems like his story checked out.

Back in the hatch, some sort of crazy countdown starts on the speakers. When it gets to zero, all of the blast doors in the hatch close, trapping Locke in the recreational room. Oh well, at least he has all those records.

Locke then enlists the help of Henry to help pry open the door. Somehow, the two of them manage to open it enough for Locke to slip under. Once he’s about halfway through, the door comes down and pierces his legs. Ouch. How ironic.

Back in the flashback, we find out that Locke’s father wasn’t really dead. He faked his own death to escape some gangstas. He asks Locke to go into a bank and take out $700,000 for him. Locke looks at the man who stole his kidney like he’s crazy. Then the father tells him that he can keep $200,000. Suddenly, it seems like a good idea.

Back on the beach, Jack takes down everyone in the poker game. Sawyer, being the man he is, gets upset, and says he wants to increase the stakes. He’s willing to put his medical supplies up for grabs to try and get back a pile of fruit. He’s a clever one, that one.

In the hatch, Locke is telling Henry to try and climb through the vents in the pantry. Wait a minute, now they decide to go through the vents? And why is the pantry filled with food again- didn’t Hurley give it all away/eat it? Oh well, Henry agrees to input the numbers in the computer, and tries to get into the vent. Unfortunately, he falls off a shelf and gets knocked out. Locke starts screaming at him when he hears the alarm start beeping. Uh-Oh.

Jack, apparently, is a great poker player. He takes down Sawyer and says he’ll come back for the medical supplies. He heads off for the hatch.

Back in the hatch, Henry finally wakes up. The alarm is beeping, and Locke shouts at him to hurry and input the code. And then we wait, with Locke. The alarm starts getting louder and louder. Suddenly it stops. A giant turbine sounds like it’s starting. The lights go out, and blacklights go on. Right above Lock appears a complex diagram of all the hatches on the island. It’s crazy! Crazy!

Blast Door Map

Flashback. The two gangstas that are trying to kill Locke’s father are at his house. They tell him that they think his father’s alive. Locke tells them he doesn’t know what they’re talking about. They leave, and thank Helen for the coffee (apparently, they’re polite thugs). Helen asks Locke, “Were you lying to those men?”. Locke denies it.

Back to the man trapped in a door. The lights come back on, and the blast doors open up. Locke is finally free from the wretched door! He’ll think twice before trying to wedge underneath one of those. The injured Locke crawls into the computer room, and for a fleeting moment, thinks that Henry abandoned him. Nah, Henry from Minnesota would never do that. Henry helps Locke onto a couch.

Back to the flashback, we see Locke bring the money to his father. They seem OK with everything now. Money solved their problems. Locke’s father opens the door to leave, and finds Helen standing there. Locke’s in trouble now! He tries to explain things, and finally pulls out the ring. “Will you marry me?” This was a superb acting scene. Helen tells him that he lied, and leaves.

Jack is walking back to the Hatch, and for some reason, it got really dark. Seriously, night sneaks up on the island like *that*. Kate catches up with him, and they talk for a bit. She says she’s happy he won. Suddenly, Jack notices a flashing light in the darkness. There’s a crate full of food with a light on top. Kate looks perplexed as she holds up a carton of “Dharma Macaroni and Cheese”. As tasty as it looked, I’ll stick with my Kraft Dinner.

Out of the jungle, Jack sees Sayid, Ana, and Charlie. They’re back.

The group of five go down into the hatch. They all look furious. Jack throws Henry onto the wall, and Sayid pulls out a gun. “Jack, wait!” Locke cries. That’s when Sayid explains it,
“We found the balloon. We found the grave. Still, I did not believe. I dug up the grave, and found a body. On the body I found this:”

Uh-Oh, Henry’s busted. Sayid holds up an ID card with the name “Henry Gale” on it, and a picture of a man that looks nothing like him.

Overall, a fairly good episode.

JJ Philbin

Captain Oats at Silly Pipe Dreams has just posted a nice interview with JJ Philbin, former writer of MADtv, SNL, and Dead Like Me. She’s now a popular writer for The OC. Oh and she’s the daughter of Regis. And she’s married to a writer from The Office.

Kingdomality

Anna brought the Kingdomality personality test to my attention. Unlike other tests, this one doesn’t base itself around the Myers-Brigg personalities, and proposes a new set of personality types based around medieval roles. The writers of the test argue that today’s comanies are like old fashioned kingdoms, and they have roles that are simmilar to these older professions. There’s even a book.

The possible types include Bishop, Benevolent Ruler, Merchant, Dreamer-Minstrel, White Knight, Discoverer, Prime Minister, Black Knight, Doctor, Engineer-Builder, Scientist and Shepherd.

The Skeleton Key (Review)

“What’s this? A surprisngly good horror movie? Blasphemy! Those haven’t existed since the good old days.”

This is the typical reaction I’m getting from people when I tell them that the Skeleton Key is actually a good movie. But it is. It really is.

First off, the story itself is actually unique. Oh sure, there’s a big old spooky house. But, rather then it being on the edge of town, it’s actually in the Swamps near New Orleans. Instead of this house being completely set apart, we see early on that the entire area is very desolate and home to some deformed people.

Caroline (Kate Hudson) is a young Nurse-turned-Hospus-worker who goes to take care of an old man who is bed-ridden and has a paralyzed face (meaning he can’t speak- although it looks like he has a lot to say). Once in the house, Caroline also has to deal with the fact that the man has an annoyingly creepy wife (Gena Rowlands) and the fact that there are ghosts in the house.

The movie itself is a perfect mixture of learning about the past of the house, learning about magic, and watching Caroline slowly unravelling the mystery about how the husband became paralyzed. All of this escalades into one exciting climax with a very satisfying twist that people have compared to the Sixth Sense and The Others (don’t worry, she isn’t the ghost).

Enough out of me, go see it.

Nintendo Revolution = Nintendo Go?

Rumors are flying around the internet these days, like pancakes fly around an IHOP. Nintendo’s next console system, currently code-named Revolution, is scheduled for release sometime this year. Although no official name for the new system has been released, several pictures were found showing a logo along with the words, “Nintendo Go”.

It’s important to note that Go is a Japanease word for Five making it a somewhat clever pun. It could also potentially stand for Gaming Online.

iPhone

Rumors are starting to grow that the iPhone is real.

Would you trust this man?

Hunters Out

Metroid Prime Hunters is out now, and the reviews have been quite positive. The multiplayer aspect has received most of the praise.

With much of the unlocking as a result of playing multiplayer games, this is definitely a new direction for the series.

(Good) Random Password Generator

Need to come up with a password? There are lots of guidelines you should follow whenever possible, but the best idea is to pick a password that is completely random.

Pick one from this random list and change around at least two characters to get a good secure password.

Once you’ve got a good password, you need to remember it. Try typing it over and over until your fingers remember it.
