I beg to differ. Last week’s episode (Dave) was ALMOST a repeat.
I shall explain shortly.
Let me guess.
“It was exactly the same as Jack’s White Rabbit episode in Season 1! There was no new characterization! Yak yak yak!”
My pre-emptive counter arguments: This was different from Jacks episode. Hurley actually spoke to Dave. His experience finished with him realizing the truth about reality, Jack with finding his Father’s coffin. Plus, how can we be sure that these hallucinations aren’t caused by the island? Kate saw + followed a horse, but you don’t think to connect those two episodes. This was Hurley’s “hallucination” episode.
As for the characterization, it was enormous. We found out how Hurley feels about his weight, and WHY he feels that way. We found out why Hurley was in the mental institution. We found out Libby was in the mental institution with him.
Either way, there is no reasonable argument you could make that this was “practically” a repeat. We found out so much about Hurley as a character, and the island plot was advanced (i.e. Hurley + Libby relationship. Henry Gale admits to being a traitor.)
On top of all this, Jin’s reaction to Hurley beating up Sawyer was one of the funniest things in any episode, ever!
A lot of people didn’t like that episode, but I really did.
The episode was all right. I thought it was funny that there were a lot of parallels with season one themes, no need to get all defensive!
