Political Idol

A bunch of people have started up a competition for anyone to try their hand at politics. City Idol has been going on for a while now, but the finals are fast approaching, and I even know one of the candidates!

The prize for winning is help running an election campaign for the next city election this fall.

Who Killed the Electric Car?

Electric Car

Don’t you just love documentaries? I mean, we’ve got everything from Corporations, to Presidents, and even McDonalds.

Well, a new trailer has just hit the web for the new documentary, Who Killed the Electric Car? It seems yet another film focused on blaming the giant car-manufacturer, General Motors.

The official site provides this small tagline to go with the movie: “In 1996 Electric cars began to appear on roads all over California. They were quiet and fast, produced no exhaust, and ran without gasoline. Who Killed the Electric Car?”

The movie will be hitting this summer. Stay tuned for details.

Subway 69

TTC - Ride the rocketDid you know that Toronto’s subway system has exactly 69 stations? As Torontoist says, “We’re that edgy.”

There’s a bunch of people who take it upon themselves to visit every station. Some people, like David Topping and Craig James White, take pictures. There’s also collectible buttons and icons you can use to document your experience.

While travelling, it helps if you have the TTC Subway Rider Efficiency Guide handy, just in case!

Tyler’s (from The Amazing Race) Movie

Japan Tyler
OK- now here’s something strange for you. Last night, it was The Amazing Race finale. After a thrilling episode, the Hippies (BJ & Tyler) came out on top. They won the million dollar prize. The final challenge was to look for the flags of all the countries they had visited during the race. I guess going to Stanford and Harvard paid off.

As the Frat Boys (Eric & Jeremy) said, “We didn’t know the last challenge was gonna be brains.”

Well, in the season finale, teams were sent racing across Japan. The entire time, Tyler bragged that he knew Japanease and that he had walked across the entire country. We assumed he was exaggerating.

Guess what?

He wasn’t.

Click here to watch the full length feature movie of Tyler backpacking across Japan. Or visit the official website.

I’ll never doubt hippy-power again.

It’s fun to play with Arts & Crafts

Broken Social Scene is headlining a big afternoon of concerts out on Olympic Island on June 24th. Also attending are Feist, J Mascis and Raising The Fawn. Lot’s of people there from Arts & Crafts, if that’s your thing.

Broken Social Scene

As of posting, tickets were still available, and for $50.50. That includes a ferry trip to the Island - how thoughtful!

Still not sure? Check out the latest video from BSS, thoughfully provided on YouTube. If you watch carefully, there’s even a scene where they are driving along Lakeshore West in winter. Or read the lengthy article written about them in a Februrary article in the New York Times: “Musically, you could say that Toronto has become a nicer but less aesthetically coherent version of Seattle in the early days of grunge.”

Black is the new $140 bill

MacBook - Black EditionSo the new MacBook is out. Starting at $1,249 (all prices Canadian), and with a Intel core duo, full-size keyboard, Bluetooth, wireless, 13″ widescreen and iSight camera all standard, lots of people are going to buy these.

But what’s with the black one? It’s only on the high-end model ($1,649), but according to their comparasion chart, all you get extra is a larger hard drive. You can even configure the white one with the exact same features for $1,509.

I don’t know what’s more sad: that Apple is charging $140 to get a different colour, or the fact that lots of people will probably end up getting it anyways.

No more paper-Dose

Dose LogoTorontoist picks up a story that Dose will no longer be published as a free daily magazine. However, CanWest will be maintaining their website, folding it into their canada.com network.

I think Dose published some genuinely interesting features during their run, providing a more national focus than most. This was especially true compared with the other free dailies, which were largely press-release driven and Toronto-centric. Ultimately, though, their desire to reach profitability led to sponsored front-pages and pushes to include a younger segment, putting me off completely.

E3 Wrapup

So, E3 has come and gone… There’s been lots of developments, a lot of disappointments, and lots of previews. What did you get out of it?

Leaked Spore Video

This is supposedly a leaked video that will be shown at E3 2006. It will be probably be taken down fairly quickly, so watch it while you can!

We’ve looked at Spore here before.

You Know You’re Obssessed With Toronto When…

If any 3 of these applied to you, you should seek help- because you ARE obssessed with Toronto!
