How to change newspaper websites

Todd Zeigler has posted his opinions on what newspapers need to do to freshen up their websites. A bit of discussion and cross-posting ensued, including one by Adrian Holovaty and a follow-up by Todd.

The Long Tail

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Chris Anderson has released a chapter from his upcoming book, The Long Tail, in a recent issue of Wired magazine. He argues that the era of the cultural mainstream and megahits is now over, to be replaced with many smaller works. (Wikipedia has lots of good starting points on the idea)

Black is the new $140 bill

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

MacBook - Black EditionSo the new MacBook is out. Starting at $1,249 (all prices Canadian), and with a Intel core duo, full-size keyboard, Bluetooth, wireless, 13″ widescreen and iSight camera all standard, lots of people are going to buy these.

But what’s with the black one? It’s only on the high-end model ($1,649), but according to their comparasion chart, all you get extra is a larger hard drive. You can even configure the white one with the exact same features for $1,509.

I don’t know what’s more sad: that Apple is charging $140 to get a different colour, or the fact that lots of people will probably end up getting it anyways.

No more paper-Dose

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

Dose LogoTorontoist picks up a story that Dose will no longer be published as a free daily magazine. However, CanWest will be maintaining their website, folding it into their canada.com network.

I think Dose published some genuinely interesting features during their run, providing a more national focus than most. This was especially true compared with the other free dailies, which were largely press-release driven and Toronto-centric. Ultimately, though, their desire to reach profitability led to sponsored front-pages and pushes to include a younger segment, putting me off completely.

Kingdomality

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

Anna brought the Kingdomality personality test to my attention. Unlike other tests, this one doesn’t base itself around the Myers-Brigg personalities, and proposes a new set of personality types based around medieval roles. The writers of the test argue that today’s comanies are like old fashioned kingdoms, and they have roles that are simmilar to these older professions. There’s even a book.

The possible types include Bishop, Benevolent Ruler, Merchant, Dreamer-Minstrel, White Knight, Discoverer, Prime Minister, Black Knight, Doctor, Engineer-Builder, Scientist and Shepherd.
